Maintenance of Grass Areas to Ensure Safety of Flight Operations

With the aim of ensuring safe and efficient flight operations at Sarajevo International Airport, the Maintenance of the Airport Areas Unit as a part of the Infrastructure Development, Technical Support and Standardization Department, continuously carries out grass mowing and landscaping activities across the airport's key operational zones. These activities encompass the taxiway strips, areas around navigation antennas, airfield lighting systems, and drainage channels on the central island area.

Regular mowing of grass along the taxiway strip has numerous key purposes. Maintaining optimal vegetation height ensures clear visibility of signs and markings, reduces the chances for Foreign Object Debris (FOD), and minimizes the risk of moisture retention and subgrade damage. This directly contributes to safe movement of aircraft and supporting airport equipment.

A special attention is dedicated to landscaping the areas around navigation and communication antennas. Controlled vegetation management in these areas prevents equipment interference, thereby ensuring stable and reliable data transmission, which is of paramount importance for navigation and air traffic control.

Mowing grass near the airfield lighting systems is crucial for the unobstructed functionality and visibility of signalling devices, particularly during harsh weather conditions and flight operations at night. This further enhances the safety of all traffic participants on the movement areas.

All these activities are implemented by the Maintenance of the Airport Areas Unit in accordance with prescribed standards and procedures, under constant supervision and coordination with the airport's operational services. This approach guarantees a high level of safety, functionality, and operational readiness of the airport infrastructure.
