Eurowings Reinstates Direct Berlin–Sarajevo Air Service

An aircraft operated by Eurowings landed today at Sarajevo International Airport, officially marking the first flight and the re-establishment of the direct, scheduled air route between Berlin and Sarajevo.

This air service is the result of joint cooperation between Sarajevo International Airport, the Sarajevo Canton Tourist Board and the Ministry of Economy of Sarajevo Canton, whose incentive measures and coordinated activities have contributed to strengthening the tourism offering and improving the international air connectivity of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Eurowings previously operated the Berlin–Sarajevo route until January 2020, when flights were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. Its reintroduction represents a significant step forward in the further development of international air traffic and in strengthening Sarajevo’s connections with the market of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The inaugural flight was attended by representatives of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ministry of Economy of Sarajevo Canton, the Mayor of Sarajevo Samir Avdić, as well as representatives of Sarajevo International Airport and the Lufthansa Group. The flight from Berlin was also attended by the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Damir Arnaut.

Following the aircraft’s landing, a traditional water salute was performed, and passengers were welcomed with symbolic gifts as a sign of hospitality in Sarajevo.

Flights on the Berlin–Sarajevo route will operate on Saturdays starting from May 9, while Thursday flights will be available from July until mid-September.

Acting Director of Sarajevo International Airport, Dino Selimović, emphasized that the re-establishment of this air route represents an important step in strengthening Sarajevo’s international connectivity, highlighting its significance for tourism, the economy and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian diaspora in Germany, as well as the continued development of the airport’s route network.

Haris Fazlagić, President of the Sarajevo Canton Tourist Board, stressed that the introduction of the direct flight from Berlin confirms that investments in air connectivity are delivering tangible results, noting the particular importance of the German market due to strong tourist interest and close ties with the diaspora.

The Minister of Economy of Sarajevo Canton, Zlatko Mijatović, underlined that each new air route contributes to an increase in tourist arrivals, strengthens economic activity and further positions Sarajevo as an attractive European destination, announcing continued systematic support for expanding the flight network.

The Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Federal Republic of Germany, Damir Arnaut, assessed that the direct connection between Berlin and Sarajevo is of strategic importance for improving overall bilateral relations and will facilitate direct contacts while increasing the number of German tourists visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdić also commented on the occasion, emphasizing that this route represents an important step for the international connectivity of the capital.

“As of today, the direct, regular air route Berlin–Sarajevo has been reintroduced. This route has multiple benefits – it strengthens tourism potential, while also opening space for business cooperation, investments, and stronger ties with our friendly German cities,” Avdić stated.
